Is this by definition a Ponzi Scheme?

I just want to make sure i understand what a Ponzi scheme is completely. Lets say i started a business and told people their money would grow slowly by me investing in stocks with their money and they can set a total number of money that they get their money back. A few sign up and I mail them fake reports of all the supposed trading I did. Later new investors show up. I give the earlier investors their money and by doing so people now trust me. I keep this cycle up until I get to the point millions of people have signed up. With billions of dollars in my pocket I just disappear and the money is gone. Is this also what Madoff basically did.

That is basically how a Ponzi Scheme works. You take new investors moneys to pay the previous investors their money back with a big gain. You then use the earlier investors as references to get even more investors to pay off the other investors you haven’t paid off yet. It just keeps snowballing until you get to a point that you can no longer get enough investors to pay off the ones that are waiting for their big returns.

Another name for this type of scheme is called Social Security. The government take money from those that are working to pay those that have already invested in Social Security.
