Japan Europe Trading
What are good trade goods in medieval times For West Africa, Europe, and Japan?
I’m really stuck!
I can’t find any examples on Google cos it’s basically useless.
THe examples I had apparently had “no proof”.
Can you help me?
You must be more specific about you time frame and your point of origin. But just as a lttle hint to help you the trade route from West African nations (Ghana, Songhay and Mali) went through Persia to India. At the time the greatest commodity to flow east was salt. Many other things from gold to silk to ebony wood and ivory was traded east. Also slaves were traded east as well. Iron and cotton came from India and saw it’s way west among other things. This occurred from the 9th century to the 15th century.
Europe was experiencng a dark age during that time. Trade didn’t really spark up until after the Holy Crusades and the expansion west to the Americas. That happened around the 15th century. Europeans colonized many nation from which they received taxes. Because of this colonization they assumed control of the commodities in nations they conquered. So from the Americas came tobacco and from Africa came slaves, coffee and cocoa. Europeans did not extensively colonize the far east however tea and gunpower went west in exchange for technology and guns among other things.
Japan like other far east Asian nation was a very closed society. Like European they dominated the region and colonized. Trading was done locally for centuries. Iron along with technology and cultural and philosophical exchanges were the primary commodities.
By no mean are these items the only things traded but they are the most notable during the time frame you requested.

Japan Rising (Paperback) $30.23 In 1871 Japan sent a high-ranking delegation to the USA and Europe, to negotiate treaties and trading agreements and to investigate how it might modernise its political and economic institutions. Led by the Foreign Minister Prince Tomomi Iwakura, the `embassy` of politicians, courtiers and officials travelled extensively around the USA for eight months, before spending a further year examining the British manufacturing industry, German armaments and French culture. The Iwakura Embassy helped change the course of Japanese history, for the official report of this journey, compiled by Prince Iwakura`s personal secretary, the Confucian scholar Kunitake Kume, was to play a key role in Japan`s transformation into a modern industrial nation. The report was translated into English in five large volumes in 2002. This carefully prepared abridgement makes it accessible to a wider range of scholars and students, and to all who are interested in the remarkable rise of modern Japan. |

The Post-Cold War Trading System by Ostry, Sylvia Edition ILL, 2 $29.49 With the end of the Cold War, the search for a new international and economic order has begun. In this comprehensive account, Sylvia Ostry provides a critical analysis of an international trade system in the throes of rapid and far-reaching change. With keen historical awareness, Ostry examines the role of key economic power brokers, particularly the United States, in the reconstruction and reconfiguration of an international economy after World War II. She argues that U.S. policy efforts were so successful that they led to an unprecedented renewal of economic growth, living standards, and education levels in postwar Europe and Japan. Ironically, those same policy successes unintentionally fostered the relative decline of U.S. dominance on the world trade scene as the reduction of trade and investment barriers prompted friction and conflict between different kinds of capitalist systems.Identifying the historical and legal issues key to postwar trade policy, Ostry has commandingly charted our economic course through the last half of this century and, perhaps, into the next.Sylvia Ostry knows this subject as few others do, both as a scholar of international trade issues and a major player in the ongoing negotiations that have created the rules of the trade game. The Post-Cold War Trading System is a fine summary of where we’ve been and where we ought to be going.—Peter Passell, economic scene columnist for The New York Times |
