How can someone buy stocks in an Indian company from U.S.A?

Is there a Online Trading company which buys stocks in India and anyone can sign up as long as they have certain requirements met.
Does a person living in the US have to go via someone they know in India to buy stocks of an Indian based company.

For a lot of the large companies out there, you can buy things called ADRs (American Depository Receipts) which basically is an abstraction that allows foreign companies to trade on the American Stock Markets like NASDAQ or NYSE. That’s how you can get shares of a foreign stock, say Toyota.

For smaller companies that don’t have ADRs, there’s a bit more hoops you have to jump through such as finding the right broker, or opening an overseas brokerage account, to buying the physical stock certificates.
