How to Invest in India as an NRI?

I would like to know whether anybody knows how can an NRI – non resident Indian or a PIO – person of India origin can invest in India.

Yes, you certainly can invest in stocks, MFs and real estate in India. However before you begin, you have to apply for and obtain a PAN card which is issued by the Income Tax department. The application form is available on the income tax dept. website.

As for brokers/ advisors it will be advisable to approach a good individual broker/ advisor who will understand your needs and guide you accordingly. You will receive personal service. Find out one from your home-town, especially someone whose services have been used by any of your friends/ contacts who can vouch for his expertise and reliability.

A corporate broker will not be able to provide personal attention (regardless of what they may claim on their website). The employees are driven by targets set by their top management. You may end up with wrong investments and commitments just because someone in that company had to meet his target.
