Stocks Trading Under 1
How can a stock trade below the Book Value?
The current price per share for Duke Energy is $19.99 -
Total Assets = 70,282,000,000
Total Liabilities = 43,786,000,000
Assets minus Liabilities = 26,496,000
Shares outstanding = 1,255,000,000
Equity/Shares = $21.11 per share
This means the price per share is currently trading $1.12 under the book value.
That is true. Actually, there have been many occassions in the past when many stocks have sold below book value. Normally, it has been when prospects were not too good.
Duke has got itsself into some problems recently. It tried to become at one point another Enron. Fortunately, it managed to fare better than Enron. With Duke it was just a mis-step. With Enron, we all know that story. Duke is now attempting to set itsself right, but the investment community judges companies greatly on past performance.
Both return on assets and roe are not very impressive currently. But when you consider the replacement cost of those assets, the stock is selling about about 15% of book value on replacement cost basis.
If you are looking for a bargain, DUK certainly is a bargain. No doubt about it.

The Business of Trading in Stocks $31.19 If speculation were an exact science, one would simply have to analyze a situation, select the appropriate rule, and buy or sell accordingly. But the factors that influence prices are infinite in number and character, as well as in their effect upon the market; and the speculators forecasts of the probable outcome are nothing more than composite products of his own emotional equipment, his theoretical knowledge of the principles involved, and that reservoir of accumulated memories called Experience. from Intuition The corporate arena in the United States has changed tremendously since the early years of the Great Depression, but the basics of buying, selling, and makingand losingmoney in the stock market have remained the same. This eighth edition of a classic of stock speculation was assembled from articles appearing in The Magazine of Wall Street in 1926 and 1927 and updated in 1933, just as new market rules and regulations were coming into play to prevent Black Friday from occurring again. With a straightforward tone and solid insight, this work, still recommended as must reading for players in the market, covers: the principles and techniques of manipulation tape reading the law of averages charts and mechanical systems fundamentals what to buy, and when rights, arbitrage, and puts and calls and more. JOHN DURAND also wrote How to Secure Continuous Security Profits in Modern Markets (1929). A. T. MILLER is also the author of Principles of Successful Speculation (1931). Author: Hadden, J. The Truth About Day Trading Stocks (Hardcover) $76.18 A realistic guide to day trading today`s stock market The Truth About Day Trading Stocks is an uncompromisingly realistic look at the challenges involved in becoming a successful day trader. Based on author Josh DiPietro`s ten years of experience as a day trader, this book dissects the psychological and strategic pitfalls that cause most aspiring day traders to fail. Written in an engaging and sometimes humorous tone, The Truth About Day Trading Stocks relates his own experiences, and in so doing, provides the reader with valuable lessons. This book is an antidote to trading industry hype that encourages traders to believe that trading is easily learned and is a fast path to wealth. The goal of this guide is to slow down the over-eager, over-optimistic amateur day trader by imparting a realistic view of the challenges of day trading and providing tools, techniques, and insights to become a successful trader without losing a huge amount of money in the process.
