Why is the buy and sell price of a stock different on sharebuilder?

It seems as though it is in their favor if I buy or sell and never is within the spread or even close to the real time trade. Is someone skimming off the top or is this how it always works?

Sharebuilders is not a “traditional trading house.” Although you can execute “traditional trades,” it isn’t really selling to that market.

Two answers

(1) Fractional and non-standard lots never trade within the spread or to the favor of the individual (versus the house). “No one” of any significant volume wants these small trades — they have to be rolled up into large lots and are priced at a premium by those who do it. Those who specialize in them, like sharebuilder, are not really working within what could be reasonably called “the market.”

(2) Some trades are averaged at small lot traders by necessity, so it depends upon which trade you are talking about. Obviously their Tuesday purchases are not individually executed trades, so the prices of these “shared trades,” like those in DRIP programs, may be managed prices rather than actual trade prices. In general, they are not designed to skim, although they are probably designed to cover cost. Nothing in life is free — you pay one way or another.

If you are unhappy, you should switch to a real discount broker like TD Ameritrade, Scott, Schwab, etc. and trade in round lots.
