why is it against the law to trade before 11am and after 5pm on Sundays in the UK???

back in the 80s and early 90s shops werent allowed to trade at all on Sundays, which i believed was due to the British Christian Religion

Sunday trading law as of 1994/

The main reason for this act is to protect shop workers. There aer Church groups which campaigned to Keep Sundays Special, however the act was brought in to try and ensure employees were not forced to work if they did not want to.

Secondly its the time a shop is allowed to trade/sell not be open which is for 6 hours in my area its 10 to 4. It may have staff there all day and night cleaning and restocking but trading times are limited due to the act, last reformed 1994.

Shops have used various ploys in an attempt to get around the law, but given the fact any of the shoppers could be a mystery shopper ensuring the act is being complied with many stores wont take the risk.
