What is Black Friday, I know it is the last weekday in November but..?

I keep seeing these questions posted by US and some Canadian people about what they are doing on Black Friday. To us here in the U.K. Black Wednesday is the day that all of the stock exchanges in the world witnessed their worst day of trading in history and so I was intrigued to know if it has anything to do with the current financial climate.

Black Friday is usually, but not necessarily the last weekday in November.

It’s the day after Thanksgiving, when most retail stores have a big sale, and the official start of the Christmas shopping season.

The name “Black Friday” was started by retail employees, because for them, it’s the most dreaded working day of the year.
